Montana Technological University is seeking an experienced and proactive Assistant Director of Information Technology – Network Services to oversee and actively manage the efficiency, security, and functionality of our enterprise networks, server systems, and IT infrastructure. This lead/supervisory role combines strategic planning with hands-on responsibility for maintenance, upgrades, and troubleshooting.  

Duties
  • Leadership and Oversight: Provide leadership in a supervisory capacity, ensuring the overall efficiency, security, and reliability of enterprise networks, core server operating systems, and hardware.
  • Strategic Planning: Develop long-range plans for the design, evaluation, and implementation of campus-wide network and server systems to meet current and future organizational needs.
  • Product Evaluation and Implementation: Lead evaluations and implementations of new technology products to enhance organizational IT capabilities.
  • Performance Monitoring: Conduct performance and operational readiness evaluations and continuously monitor systems to ensure optimal functionality.
  • Issue Resolution: Perform in-depth failure analysis and resolution for network and server systems to maintain high availability and performance.
  • Hardware Management: Planning and scheduling the replacement of network hardware to ensure minimal downtime in operations.
  • Disaster Recovery and Cybersecurity: Develop technical procedures and oversee planning for disaster recovery, enterprise backups, and cybersecurity initiatives.
  • Security Management: Coordinate campus-wide security measures, including antivirus, spam, and malware protection, network firewalls, authentication, and account maintenance; collaborate with the Computer Support Services Manager to ensure robust endpoint security.
  • Active Directory Management: Maintain the stability of campus Active Directory services, including the configuration and management of group policy settings.
  • Identity Management: Configure, update, and maintain Single Sign-On (SSO) identity settings within Microsoft Entra ID to ensure secure and seamless user access.
  • Account Management: Oversee account lifecycle management, including the creation, deletion, and disabling of accounts, while maintaining compliance with organizational access control policies.
  • Wireless System Support: Support and maintain enterprise wireless systems, including wireless controllers, access points, and associated management tools.
  • File Management: Oversee file shares, permissions, and the implementation of alternative file management solutions.
  • Storage Administration: Manage the installation, configuration, maintenance, and optimal utilization of SAN/NAS resources.
  • Cable/Switch Management: Ensure proper equipment rack cable management in communications rooms, including port activation and VLAN administration.
  • Data Center Support: Provide data center-level services, including preventive maintenance, environmental monitoring, log interpretation, and firmware updates for routers, switches, backups, and restores.
  • Network Design: Implement and maintain network VLANs, DNS enterprise hierarchy, IPv4/IPv6 protocols, and logical network design.
  • Network Monitoring: Install, configure, and maintain graphical tools for monitoring network traffic, ensuring continuous connectivity, resource utilization, and trend analysis.
  • Systems Administration: Manage hybrid IT environments, including Microsoft Entra ID, Office 365, and Microsoft Exchange; upgrade and maintain both physical and virtual on-premise servers to ensure seamless integration and performance.
  • Automation and Scripting: Utilize PowerShell and other scripting tools to automate tasks and implement efficient IT solutions.
  • Team Management: Oversee performance assessments, recruitment, and transitional processes for the Network System Support team member.
Due to the hands-on nature of this position, the successful candidate will be required to work on-site to ensure the stability, security, and optimal performance of our IT infrastructure 
Key Responsibilities:
•    Provide leadership while actively performing maintenance, upgrades, and configuration of networks and server systems.
•    Develop and execute long-term strategies for the design, implementation, and optimization of campus-wide IT systems.
•    Conduct performance monitoring, resolve failures, and plan and perform hardware replacements.
•    Directly configure and maintain identity and access systems, including Single Sign-On (SSO) settings in Microsoft Entra ID.
•    Coordinate and implement campus-wide security measures, including anti-virus, malware protection, and firewall management.
•    Support and maintain Active Directory services, group policies, file sharing systems, and enterprise wireless networks.
•    Administer and perform updates for hybrid environments, including Microsoft Entra ID, Office 365, and Microsoft Exchange.
•    Lead disaster recovery, enterprise backups, and cybersecurity planning and execution.
•    Utilize PowerShell and other scripting tools to automate tasks and streamline processes.
•    Perform physical and virtual server maintenance, upgrades, and optimizations.
•    Oversee and directly manage the configuration and maintenance of SAN/NAS systems, VLANs, and network design (IPv4/IPv6).
•    Manage com-room equipment, including cable organization, port activation, and firmware updates.
•    Mentor and collaborate with Network System Support staff, ensuring operational excellence.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science in Networking Technology / Information Technology, related field or 8 years of related experience. 
  • Minimum of three years of relevant experience in Enterprise Computer System Environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in LAN/WAN technologies, Advanced Systems Administrator, and Enterprise Systems Management; A+ Hardware and Software certification;
  • CompTIA Network+ certification or equivalent
  • Familiarity with Aruba networking and wireless solutions

Physical Demands
  • Lift over 50 pounds
  • Walk, bend, sit, stand for extended periods of time
  • Kneel, climb ladders 6 ft and higher, crouch
  • Carry equipment up a maximum of three flights of stairs
  • Move equipment via a cart across campus, which includes up and down hills.
