Materials Laboratory Manager (Researcher II or III)

Department: The Center for Advanced Mineral, Metallurgical and Materials Processing (CAMP)

Employment Detail:    Permanent, Full-Time

Reports to the CAMP director, maintaining and managing CAMP’s materials testing laboratory for use in research, instructional programs and service activities.  Develops new and existing clients for the service component of CAMP. Conduct research/development activities: performing experiments, simulations, and theoretical calculations; making and recording detailed observations, analyzing data, and interpreting results; compiling results, documenting outcomes, and preparing technical reports. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and conduct project tasks and accomplish goals.  Contributes to and occasionally leads proposal development and partnership-building to maintain and grow CAMP’s research portfolio. Ensures that safe working conditions are maintained in all of CAMP’s laboratories. Trains faculty and students to operate research equipment as needed. Acts as purchasing agent for CAMP’s service and research activities. Provides project development support as needed. Oversees the utilization of data collection software and the maintenance of appropriate data archives. Prepares service quotations, customer reports and billing information for service projects. Supervises student workers, including hiring, training and mentoring. Develops professional presentations, submits research papers to peer-reviewed journals and prepares research proposals as appropriate. Maintains CAMP’s ISO 17025 laboratory certification. Researcher III would also lead research activities, lead proposal development, and serve as a principal investigator or co-principal investigator on funded projects. This is a soft money position, with continuation dependent of funding.

  • Demonstrated experience training and mentoring students
  • Demonstrated experience working with data acquisition and archiving
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and complete deliverables at high quality, on schedule and within budget.

For Researcher II

  • Possession of a B.S. degree in engineering or science, preferably in an area related to materials science, with a minimum of 12 years of directly applicable research experience relevant to working in and managing a materials testing laboratory


  • Possession of a M.S. degree in engineering or science, preferably in an area related to materials science, with a minimum of 4 years of experience relevant to working in and managing a materials testing laboratory

For Researcher III

  • Possession of a Ph.D. degree in engineering or science, preferably in an area related to materials science, with a minimum of 2 years of experience relevant to working in and managing a materials testing laboratory


  • Demonstrated capability of working with universal test frames, strain gauges, Linear Variable Differential Transformers (LVDTs), and composite specimens
  • Completion of one or more professional society presentations
  • Acceptance of one or more peer-reviewed publications
  • Submission of one or more research proposals
  • Demonstrated experience in laboratory supervision
  • Demonstrated experience in test plan design, from initiation to completion
  • Demonstrated experience with business development, collaboration development, and client support and satisfaction for research services.
  • Successful track record in proposal writing.
